Next-Generation 4G/5G IMS for Post-Crash Rescue
The eCall emergency call system is a system composed of an on-board eCall terminal, a mobile communication network, and a PSAP call center, which can effectively improve the timeliness of traffic accident rescue and reduce the accident casualty rate. The eCall terminal is an automotive-grade product and can still work normally after the vehicle encounters a violent collision. Even if the eCall system fails due to an accident, once it detects that the automatic trigger conditions are met, the eCall system will try to make an emergency call to the maximum extent, report the minimum data information, and establish a two-way voice call. The eCall system can be triggered automatically or manually. Manual triggering can be activated by the eCall button or voice call in the car. Automatic triggering means that the in-car sensor automatically starts when it detects that the vehicle has collided and the airbag has popped out. The emergency call is made through the vehicle communication module. The eCall system combines the global positioning system (GPS or Beidou) to accurately obtain the vehicle's location information and transmit the information to the emergency rescue center in the nearest area to report the relevant information of the accident, such as location, time, vehicle information, etc., so as to carry out rescue activities.

A typical eCall system includes at least: 1) GNSS receiver; 2) GNSS antenna; 3) NAD (network access device, including SIM card); 4) Mobile network antenna; 5) ECU; 6) Microphone; 7) Speaker/emergency caller; 8) Manual button; 9) Battery or power supply system; 10) Warning or indication device; 11) Collision detection system (sensor).

The EU's new generation NG eCall system is an upgraded version of the traditional eCall. It mainly optimizes the technical standards, data transmission capabilities and network compatibility of the vehicle emergency call system: that is, it is upgraded from 2G/3G cellular networks to 4G/5G and IMS technology. It no longer relies on voice channels, but uses IMS technology to achieve concurrent transmission of voice and data, which greatly improves the data transmission rate while expanding data capacity.

Regulatory Mandate & Market Driver
Since April 2018, all new models have been mandatory to be equipped with the so-called eCall system. The automatic emergency call system stipulated by the EU is now technically outdated. The next generation emergency call system (NG eCall) will provide a future-proof upgrade for this system. NG eCall first transmits data via LTE and then establishes a voice connection with the vehicle via a commercial 4G network. LTE is already very popular in Europe and provides extensive network coverage. In the future, the system will also use 5G networks, whose coverage is rapidly expanding throughout Europe.

From January 1, 2026, all vehicles put on the market in Europe must be equipped with the new eCall system. This is the only way to obtain the necessary approval. One year later, this regulation also applies to vehicles that have already been type-approved. All vehicles that roll off the production line from January 1, 2027 must be equipped with the NG eCall system.

Enhanced Capabilities: Multimedia Data & Passenger Integration
The introduction of NG eCall brings many improvements. The speed of conversations with passengers in the car has been significantly improved. Previous restrictions on data transmission will also be lifted. While previous systems could only transmit small amounts of data via 2G networks, high-performance connections will be possible in the future. For example, if the passenger's smartphone is integrated into the emergency call transmission, rescuers can contact the affected person directly at any time - even if the passenger has left the vehicle after the accident. Another option is to transmit a real-time image of the vehicle or, with the passenger's consent, their health data. These added features will enable the emergency call center to assess the situation more precisely, allowing the emergency services to provide assistance faster and more effectively. In addition to basic data such as the coordinates of the accident site, multimedia data can also be transmitted via the mobile network.
